The wonderful Spike Milligan titled his book in which he wrote about his time serving in the army during WWII: 'Adolf Hitler: My Part in his Downfall'. As a young man I read this and other books by him, as a lad growing up with the Goon Show on the wireless I loved his irrelevant humour, so in honour to him, I have decided to show the letter I wrote to the Prime Minister as my part in the digital I.D. downfall.
Tony Blair tried to introduce these sinister weapons against the freedoms of the people, which would have given his, and all future Governments, total control over the population. At that time the campaign group, 'No2ID' was organised and many of us who care for democracy and the freedom of the individual, signed up to campaign against his plans. A change of Government eventually put paid to these anti-freedom weapons.
When Starmer made the announcement he was going to foist this failed idea upon us in digital form, which many older people would never be able to cope with, annoyed me so much I sent him my letter below - you may guess correctly I never received a reply:
Dear Prime Minister,
It has been a long time since I last wrote to a Prime Minister, that was to the then P.M. John Major. I wrote him several letters regarding why he was losing his core support and was, as no doubt this letter will be too, was ignored. I was proven right, and he lost the 1997 general election - massively.
I now write to you with the same warning, with your insistence on turning our beloved country into a police state with I.D. cards. The irony is, they are being planned as a way of preventing the thousands of criminals breaking into Britain illegally, which will not stop a single one of them and will be as effective as the failed promise to "Smash the gangs". Those crossing the Channel in rubber boats dispose of all I.D. in the sea on their way here, if they arrive here without I.D. how will the imposition of cards on all law-abiding British subjects help? It is the British people being punished, not the criminals coming here.
When the appalling Tony Blair tried to introduce these freedom sapping tools of tyrants I joined and campaigned for No2ID, which ceased after the previous threat of these horrendous things had diminished - now they are back and even worse, they are planned to be digital. This will be a hackers dream getting hold of masses of information on every person in the country. It will also be a major problem for those, who like me, do not use these app things on their mobile phones.
I ask, why do you want to steal what little freedom we have left? I was born into a country that had only a few years earlier defeated a tyrant, now you are behaving like one. Since being elected last year your Government has been an unmitigated disaster, you have wrecked the economy and made us all poorer, and now you want to stop our freedom.
The sooner you and your hopeless Ministers are gone the better for the nation, for God's sake go now and call a general election so we can be shot of the lot of you.
Yours, living in fear of the future,
Derek Bennett
As a final note, people who need to renew their driving licences, as experienced by Michael Wood of this parish, are now being directed to a very confusing Government app to confirm their identity. No doubt this untrustworthy and sneaky Government will turn this into some sort of compulsory I.D. The big state will be watching and controlling you.
