When Britain was the world's policeman, it acted with an even hand. The suppression of slavery involved the arrest of slave ships from the U.S.A., France, Spain, Portugal and other countries. How different now that freedom's baton has been passed to the U.S.A. No one can seriously morn the removal of Venezuela dictator Nicolás Maduro and his wife. As his regime is still in place, the next months will show if US actions were solely driven by oil or democratic sympathy.
President Trump dodged the draft multiple times and now, as Commander in Chief, happily sends US forces into one battle after another. He used bankruptcies to force through favourable deals. Now it's military force and or aid.
Support for Putin's criminal regime is beyond comprehension. Except when looked at through the prism of 'Big, Beautiful Deals'. Of course when deals and morality coincide, the result is, as the saying goes, win-win.
Colombia poses an equal threat in terms of drugs to Venezuela, but seemingly no move to change there. Cuba's dictatorship has impoverished people and spread communism. Despite a renewed vow to impose the Monroe doctrine, this is an acceptable dictatorship, or cynically, they don't have anything worthwhile to exploit.
Trump declares that problems outside the Americas are not his problem. Yet, he has tried to broker peace between Thailand and Myanmar. Ignoring the close proximity of Russia (55 miles, but 2.5 miles from the nearest Russian Island) he has steadfastly supported Russia. Is that because of the 'Great Big Beautiful Deal' he and Putin agreed?
For a world Policeman, the 21 African dictators and others scattered across the globe should be a concern. Apparently not. The democratic world needs a policeman, it does not need a bent Cop who hires out his gun for profit. That attitude empowers and emboldens 'acceptable' dictators to act against democracy and humanity.
