Cameron should be placating, not alienating, Eurosceptic MPs and voters, says Bruges Group

Trust in the Prime Minister will be severely damaged

Robert Oulds

Statement re the Govt’s attempts to thwart Euro referendum - from Director of the Bruges Group, Robert Oulds

“Trust in the Prime Minister will be severely damaged by his failure to listen to the reasonable demands of the British people to defend our democracy. Mr Cameron now runs the risk of appearing both aloof and arrogant.

“Public respect for him and the Government will be seriously damaged as a result of the refusal to have a free and fair debate. The Government will also be adding to its reputation for weakness, by confronting and then failing to control its MPs.

“Cameron’s reneging on his “Cast Iron Guarantee” to hold a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty damaged trust in him, which contributed to his failure to gain a full majority at the 2010 General Election. He now risks leading his Party to the same fate as that of the Liberal Democrats, who have suffered dearly in the estimation of the public for repeatedly failing to keep their manifesto pledges.

“Instead of shutting down debate on the referendum, the Cameron should be showing equanimity. He should demonstrate his willingness to listen to the people and his Party’s grassroots members, who overwhelmingly want a say on Europe, and permit his MPs to vote with their consciences. For without the goodwill of all three, his ability to win elections will be severely compromised.”
